Wholesome
animal food for a healthy life
Animals
are not capable of extracting the total, or gross,
energy of an animal food. Because of that,
the energy content of animal foods is measured in
several ways:
gross energy, digestible energy, and metabolizable
energy.
Animals
generally eat to their caloric requirements.
However, due to sedentary lifestyle, and increased
palatability, they sometimes overeat, and must be
portion controlled
As
well, some raw
dog foods,
or value-priced food, are not as energy dense as Superpremium
Dog Food,
and an animal may not consume enough to fulfill
its caloric requirements e.g. a pregnant bitch, or
a search and rescue dog.
Nutrient
utilization depends on digestibility and
biological value.
Increasing
digestibility of a Premium
Pet Food
means nothing if the biological value is not
present.
Just
what is biological Value? (BV).
A
term used to describe the amount of amino acid
present in a particular nutrient, usually used for
determining protein value of foods such as Superpremium
Pet Food.
The quality of any nutrient is based on its BV.
Animal
protein sources generally contain higher BV than
plant based protein. It is the relationship of the
nutrient digested, absorbed and retained, to the
amount digested. The BV of a protein is not in its
ability to supply energy, but in its ability to
supply amino acids.
