Omega 3 and 6

Currently studies have shown that one Part Omega 3 to 5-10 Parts Omega 6 is the appropriate level.

Omega-3 fatty acids are a form of polyunsaturated fats, one of four basic types of fats that animals and humans derive from food. (Cholesterol, saturated fat, and monounsaturated fat are the others.) All polyunsaturated fats, including omega-3s, are increasingly recognized as being important to good health.

Some doctors and scientists believe that consuming too many foods rich in saturated and trans fats attributes to the development of degenerative diseases, including heart disease and even cancer. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, however, are healthy for animals and humans. Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found primarily in cold-water fish such as Salmon, and Canola Oil, and Flax Oil, are in this category, along with omega-6 fatty acids, which are found in grains, most plant-based oils, poultry and eggs

Recently veterinarians have found that fatty acids play and important role in skin and coat health. As well, allergic responses, inflammation and organ function are all governed by the appropriate level of EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids)
What is considered an Essential Fatty Acids may differ in species, as an example Arachidonic Acid is only considered “essential” to cats.

Omega-3 fatty acids included in Petcurean Products:

          Alpha-linolenic acid ( ALA )

          Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)

          Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

Omega 6 fatty aids include:

Linoleic acid (LA) and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)

          Gamma linolenic acid (GLA)

          Dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA)

          Arachidonic acid (AA)

Many pet foods contain far more Omega 6 than Omega 3, which may INCREASE the inflammatory response.
