WEST COAST ASSISTANCE TEAMS
Feb 2007

West Coast Assistance Teams is a non-profit charity that through our PAWS program provides highly trained and loving dogs to disabled people. Our program is certified and we are governed by the Guide Animal Act legislation.
Due to the exponential rise in youth violence, the problem of how to effectively treat at-risk youth has become a critical concern for our communities.
As a youth intervention program PAWS (POSITIVE ACTION WITH STUDENTS) serves teens who are struggling to succeed in traditional school environments. PAWS is a program that engages adolescents, deemed to be at high risk for continued behavioral and emotional challenges, in the training of assistance dogs.
The student trainers gain social and emotional competence while working with non judgemental beings. The feeling of love and acceptance they receive from the dogs in itself can be life changing. The program improves attendance, self-esteem, grades and decreases behavioural problems.

PETCUREAN TO THE RESCUE

Local, Canadian pet food company steps forward to help RAPS and Turtle Garden Spay Neuter Society

From the Richmond Animal Protection Society Newsletter, February 2009Petcurean pet food company is an extraordinary organization. Not only are they committed to producing high quality pet foods with exceptional ingredients and producing their products in an environmentally sensitive fashion, but they also understand the value of helping all animals - even the ones at shelters. To that end, Petcurean recently donated high quality cat food to the RAPS Cat Sanctuary and wholesome dog food to the Turtle Garden Spay/Neuter Society. These generous donations have been an enormous help to RAPS and Turtle Gardens, but the best part is that the shelter animals will benefit from this wholesome pet food. Thank you to the staff of Petcurean for making such a huge difference to homeless animals around British Columbia.

CANINES FOR CANCER
2006 Tour de Rock
benefitting Cops For Cancer

In June 1994, Sergeant Gary Goulet of the Edmonton Police Service met Lyle Jorgenson, a 5-year-old boy who had cancer. Goulet requested the meeting after learning that Lyle was being ridiculed at school because of his hair loss due to chemotherapy. Goulet was so moved by the boy's story that he decided to do something. That was the beginning of the Canadian Cancer Society's Cops for Cancer campaign. "My head was already shaved, so I asked Lyle to have his picture taken with me in a police cruiser", Goulet said. Goulet gathered a group of Edmonton officers who were willing to shave their own heads and they joined the boy in school to show kids that being bald was cool.
Goulet's activities received plenty of media coverage, along with calls and letters from citizens touched by the officer's campaign. One letter, however, moved Goulet to do more. It came from a woman whose daughter had lost her hair during cancer treatment. She urged Goulet to continue his campaign. Goulet contacted the Canadian Cancer Society and the head-shaving event caught on and was adopted by neighbouring police forces. Then it spread across the country. Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, Cops for Cancer has raised over $20 million dollars for cancer research.

In June 2006, Petcurean Pet Nutrition co-sponsored Canines for Cancer with the Total Anarchy Flyball Team in Victoria, B.C. The event allowed dog owners to clock their dog's speed on a radar gun for a donation to Cops for Cancer.

SHEEP DOG TRIAL
July 22-23 2006

There have been flocks of sheep grazing these pastures and following the trails here since 1948. These flocks grazed here on this land, now under government management. The early British immigrants raised these sheep for food, and also brought with them the Border Collie.
These trials have been held here annually since 1992, and maintained later by two top handlers. With support from businesses and friends, the trial's reputation spread. Winners from this Trial have been awarded seven National Sheepdog Trial titles, as it attracts top handlers and judges from across North America.

Making Great Strides Towards the Finish Line

The Walk to Cure Diabetes is Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s most powerful fundraising engine attracting over 45,000 Canadians every year who are dedicated  to find a cure for diabetes. In 2006, $6.1M was raised and the goal for 2007 is $6.9M.

This event provides an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about juvenile (Type 1) diabetes, raise much needed funds to continue essential JDRF funded research programs and is a great way for corporations and families to get out for a day of fun and fitness.

Petcurean Pet Nutrition was very proud to be a sponsor of this event in June 2007.
