People Behind the Pets showcases specific members of the animal community who have amazing stories to share. Today we are featuring Ellie Stivers, 19, a member of #TeamPetcurean, who has not only taken the world of dog sports by storm, but also has a heart full for pet rescue and pet nutrition. “You need to make sure she keeps playing, she’s going to be a world champion one day!”
The words Ellie Stivers’ coach, Jeff Hill said to her mom on her first day of practice and wow, was he ever right!
At the young age of 14, Ellie Stivers entered the world of dog sports not knowing what to expect and definitely not knowing what major role this sport would play in her future. Not only is Ellie a competitor to be reckoned with, but her story is one of passion, commitment, and the ultimate love for her dogs.
“When I got my first dog Presto, I was just so excited that I finally was allowed to have a dog, I wasn’t thinking about competition. We just started with Frisbee in the backyard, I watched YouTube videos to get better. From there, my mom told me about a class 40 minutes away, so I went and well, the rest is history,” says Ellie.
When you talk to Ellie about her sport, her precious pups, and her career accomplishments it doesn’t take long to hear and feel the joy that drives her. In the beginning of her career Ellie claims that winning was not her first priority, she didn’t care about placing or standing on the podium, she just wanted to get better, have fun, and connect with cool people. However, her talent could not be ignored.
In September of 2012, at the age of 15 and with less than a year experience Ellie convinced her Mom to drive her over 1,800 miles, from California to Tennessee to compete in “SkyHoundz Last Chance Qualifiers”. She didn’t have high expectations of winning, she just wanted to meet everyone in the sport who she had been admiring in the past year. She qualified in the Last Chance Qualifiers and went on to World’s the next day, there she shocked her competitors and tied for first place!
“From that moment at World’s, I was completely hooked and this sport soon became what I wanted to do with every single second of my freetime,” says Ellie.
From there Ellie mastered her sport, putting in more and more hours into training. Since 2012, Ellie has won the 2013 D-Tour Women’s Distance World Championship (still the youngest to do so), placed in the top 3 at the Skyhoundz and Ashley Whippet World Championship Qualifier in 2015 and is currently ranked one of California’s top 3 competitors in Canine Disc. All accomplished under the legal age, pretty impressive!
Although Ellie has seen great accomplishments in her sport, her long term goal is to educate. Her ultimate dream is to have 5 or 6 dogs that she can travel the world with and promote the power of rescue and a healthy dog lifestyle.
“If I can influence one person to rescue a dog, or educate someone about pet nutrition through Petcurean, I call it a successful day,” says Ellie.
Ellie is the definition of a selfless and loving pet parent. Her four dogs, Presto, Hocus, Wizard, and newest addition to the family, Shazam are nothing short of pure magic in Ellie’s life.
“My entire career revolves around those 4 dogs and making them feel happy. I have been able to do so many things in my short lifespan. However, the times I hold closest to my heart are the memories I have made with my dogs.”
Petcurean Pet Nutrition is so proud to have Ellie Stivers as part of #TeamPetcurean and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes. We are rooting for you Ellie!
“As a breeder I highly recommend GO! DAILY DEFENCE™…I also suggest to people who have dogs with coat conditions (i.e. those dogs with tendencies to get dry skin or other ailments that affect their coats) that they switch to feeding GO! I would like to add that dogs LOVE GO!“
