People Behind the Pets: Jordan Kahana

People Behind the Pets showcases specific members of the animal community who have amazing stories to share. Recently, we spoke with Jordan Kahana, 1/3 of the YouTube travelling trio Adventure Squad! Jordan shared with us the emotional details of how he became a pet parent to Zeus and Sedona and what he’s learned along the way.

Let’s start at the beginning. Tell us about how you came to own Zeus and Sedona?

I was on a road trip to the Grand Canyon in December. About 50 miles south of Page, Arizona on a two-lane highway in the middle of nowhere, I noticed two black dots running in the middle of the road. I swerved out of the way and immediately pulled over to find out they were two puppies. I scooped them up, took them to an Animal Hospital and decided to keep them. That is how the Adventure Squad was born!

How did you come up with their names?

I was driving from Sedona, Arizona to Page, Arizona when I found the pups. A few friends suggested Sedona and I liked it. It’s a pretty girls name.

Zeus took a little more time to name. People continued to say how our paths crossing was fate or a sign from the universe. Initially I thought to name him Hermes, which is the Greek god of travel and the messenger of Zeus. I always liked Greek Mythology. In the end the name Hermes never stuck and I decided to go with Zeus.

The video you posted on your YouTube channel about finding the pups got a lot of attention, why do you think so many people enjoyed it?

People had two reactions to this story. They were angered and baffled that someone could leave these two puppies just abandoned in the middle of the desert. Which truly is a sad concept when you sit for a moment to think about it. The other reaction is the love and serendipitous connection of the Adventure Squad finding each other. It’s a classic “who rescued who” story.

It resonates with the viewer because the puppies are adorable, but there are many levels of emotions that you go through. Ultimately, with a happy ending.

People love watching the videos you post about your travels with Zeus and Sedona, what’s the coolest part about sharing your adventures with people?

I love storytelling. The challenge of keeping it fun and entertaining is the coolest part. We have to keep adventuring and try new ideas to share our stories. We continue to grow and it’s awesome to see more people interested and engaged in our story.

What’s your favorite thing about being a dog parent?

My favorite part of being a dog parent is the pups reaction to me. I love seeing them grow and having them with me for all of our travels. Our growth as a team and their ability to respond when I call them is a joy every single day.

Were there any pet parenthood surprises?

Who knew two little puppies could pee and poop so much!

Any tips you’ve picked up about traveling with dogs?

Remember to bring water and snacks. Take pee breaks. Enjoy the views.

At Petcurean, one of our slogans is “We Put Pets First”, how do you personally put pets first?

Our whole day revolves around the pups! They wake me up every morning, around 6:30/7am to go out. From there the day begins. Making sure we get our daily exercise, whether it’s going to the dog park, hiking or long walks through the park or beach pier. Their activity has me on the go, which has us all in good spirits.

What is the importance of pet nutrition in your day to day life?

As the Adventure Squad we are traveling a lot and constantly on the move. Staying happy and healthy is the most important part of our day-to-day life. Being able to provide the pups with the best food on the market to help their muscles recover quicker and re-energize them for the next adventure makes me feel better when it’s time to eat.
